All India Forum for the Right to Education (AIFRTE) condemns the suspension of Dr. S. Ali Nadeem Rezavi, Associate Professor of History at the Aligarh Muslim University, by the Vice-Chancellor. In spite of his academic achievements and potential, the denial of his appointment as Professor for the last two years is indicative of prejudice and bias already existing against him.

What is cause for further outrage is that he has been suspended for criticizing the Vice-Chancellor in the social media. This constitutes a gross violation of freedom of speech and expression and is a matter of grave concern which shows how criticism is being silenced by authoritarian administrations in educational institutions.

Both the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University are retired military officers. This contravenes the stipulation of the University Grants Commission that persons occupying these offices should come from academic backgrounds. Modes of military ‘discipline’ are alien to the ethos of academic institutions. However, recent experiences, notably at Delhi University and elsewhere, indicate that even in the Central Universities those who dare to question the arbitrary conduct of the authorities are being subjected to harassment and victimization.

AIFRTE expresses full solidarity with the faculty of AMU in their struggle to defend the cause of academic freedom and teachers’ self-respect. It demands that the order of suspension served on Dr S. Ali Nadeem Rezavi be withdrawn and he be re-instated with immediate effect.
