A note on the recent amendment to the Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act

The West Bengal government recently amended the Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act in the face of strong opposition from farmers groups and political parties. Using its brute majority in the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha, the amendment was pushed through which gives uncontrolled access to the rural agricultural produce market to large corporations and would be highly detrimental for the lives and livelihoods of the millions of small producers and other people associated with the marketing of agricultural produce.The policies of the Modi and Mamata governments are convergent on helping corporates gain control over the agriculture and agricultural produce marketing in India. Following is a analysis in Bengali of the amended law and its possible effects on the farmers and related workers in West Bengal.
