Large numbers of Manipuri students and NEFIS activists protest at Manipur Bhawan against gross misappropriation of funds meant for Manipuri students.

Today, a large number of students of Manipur, under the banner of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) protested against the gross misappropriation of funds intended for them at Manipur Bhawan. The students of weaker sections, especially ST/OBC/Minorities are not getting their Post-Metric Scholarship. The said scholarship comes under the centrally sponsored scholarship scheme; the fund of which for the past and current year is being duly released by Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

However, this is appalling that despite the sanction and release of fund from Central Government, the State Government has failed to provide the scholarships to students of above mentioned categories for several years. The students are very agitated with the Manipur state authorities who have withheld the funds released from central government meant for them, since 2010-2011. For the students such corrupt practices represent gross violation of social justice. United Kakching student also participated in the protest, extending solidarity to the struggle of the student from the marginalized section of the society. Despite of heavy rainfall in Delhi the students stood in front of Manipur Bhawan for their rights till the Office of the Resident Commission accepted their memorandum (see below).

To,
The Hon’ble  Chief Minister,
Government of Manipur,
Imphal.

Through the Office of the Resident Commission, Manipur Bhawan, New Delhi.

Subject: Appeal for release of post matric scholarship for students of weaker sections.

Respected Sir,

We have come to know that students of weaker sections specially SC/ST/BC/Minorities are not getting their Post-Metric Scholarship. It is to be further noted that said scholarship comes under the centrally sponsored scholarship scheme, fund of which for the past and current year is being duly released by Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. However, this is appalling that despite the sanction and release of fund from Central Government, State Government has failed to provide the scholarships to students of above mentioned categories for several years. The students are very agitated with the Manipur state authorities who have withheld the funds from central government meant for them, since 2010-2011.

We, through this memorandum, would like to apprise you about this gross violation of social justice and also to appeal to your good office to urgently intervene in the matter so that earliest disbursement of scholarship starts. We also request Hon’ble Chief Minister to take other appropriate actions which may deem just, fit and proper so that such delay in disbursement of scholarship is not repeated.

Your cooperation in this issue of social justice will be highly solicited.

Thanking you.

Yours Sincerely,
