September 2 strike : Hyderabad Central University Contract Employees Union statement

September 2, 2015

WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!
MAKE THE GENERAL STRIKE OF 2 SEPTEMBER 2015 A SUCCESS AND DEMONSTRATE THE POWER OF THE UNITED WORKING CLASS!

The Hyderabad Central University Contract Employees Union joins the all India General strike of labour unions to protest the unjust labour laws imposed upon the working classes by the new Central and State Government policies designed to please the capitalist puppet masters. We stand in solidarity with the working classes of the entire country in fighting for the right to dignified labour, the right to a decent wage and the right of workers everywhere to organize. Together, the working classes constitute a powerful majority, whom the government and elite try to divide by creating a graded hierarchy where every working class person is distracted from fighting directly for a democratic system and wrenching power from the elite puppet masters of the system. Working classes from minority and oppressed sections such as dalit, adivasi, Muslim, women, transgender people are painted as the enemy of the majority of the working class, to distract them from fighting the most powerful minority of them all – the ruling elite comprising of only 1% of the world’s population but controlling 50% of the world’s wealth. As a union consisting mostly of dalit bahujan women workers, we believe that we must fight a fearless struggle united under the leadership of the most marginalized sections of the working class, until true democracy is achieved and we make democratic decisions about our lives, labour, and society.

Our demands on this campus are:
1. Wage on par with all central government employees must be implemented for contract workers. Contract hiring can not be made an excuse for substandard wages.
2. All workers who work more than 240 days should be made permanent and all workers should be directly hired by the University without going through a contractor.
3. Workers deserve a bonus for Dussehra on par with the bonuses of permanent workers.
4. Immediately reinstate the 5 plumbers who were terminated from their jobs in January 2014 and the library worker who was fired this month.
5. Workers must be issued PF statements by the University on a regular basis.
6. Some workers have also not received proper ESI cards or numbers, leading to financial devastation when they undergo medical crises. This should be immediately rectified.
7. Workers must be issued a fresh set of two uniforms and can no longer be scolded or punished with enforced leave without pay because of lack of uniform or taking emergency leave.
8. Workers should have the option of 2 casual leaves per month.
9. Sanitation workers must all be issued gloves and soaps regularly, as well as slippers.
10. Under the Chaitanya Society contractor, arrears of the minimum wage payments have not yet been released by the Labor Court because of a stay issued in a case filed by the University. The University must speedily withdraw that case in order for the due minimum wages to be released.
11. Electrical workers and A/C operators, garbage workers, and mess workers should also get all the facilities of minimum wage, ESI, PF, salary slips and PF statements.
12. The union should get an office space. All workers should get campus gate passes to move freely in and out of campus. Security staff should stop getting orders to harass workers.
