Seminar on Working Class Movement in India in the Twenty-first Century: Continuity and Change, Orientation and Possibilities, Problems and Challenges

July 24, 2010

26-27-28 July, 2010, Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)

Dear friend,

It is going to be two years since the untimely demise of our inseparable co-warrior Com. Arvind. All those who had worked with him still are not able to come to terms with the fact that he is no more among us. The void created by his departure cannot be filled for a long time to come; however, his dreams will be alive in our dreams and will continue to strengthen our resolve.

On the occasion of the first death anniversary of Com. Arvind last year on July 24, the First Arvind Memorial Seminar had been organised in New Delhi on the topic: Labour Laws and the New Forms of Working Class Resistance in the Era of Globalisation. As an extension to this very topic, the subject for this year has been decided as The Working Class Movement in India in the Twenty-first Century: Continuity and Change, Orientation and Possibilities, Problems and Challenges.

Considering the expanse of the topic, the duration of the seminar will be three days this year. In the first session on the first day, the formal declaration of the establishment of the Arvind Memorial Trust and the Arvind Institute of Marxist Studies which will function under its aegis, will be made followed by an informal and intimate discussion with the invited comrades on the objectives and tasks of the trust and the institute. The decision to establish this memorial trust and the institute of Marxist studies was taken at the condolence meeting held in memory of Com. Arvind in Gorakhpur on July 27, 2008. It is now being implemented with the cooperation and support from friends and comrades like you.

From the second session on July 26 to the second session on July 28, papers on the topic of the seminar will be read followed by discussions.

About the topic

The twentieth century was the century of imperialism and the first editions of proletarian revolutions. It is an undisputed fact that especially during the last two decades of the previous century, there have been significant changes in the modus operandi and structure of the world capitalism, in the internal equations and political scenario of the imperialist world, the character of transnational corporations and the role of the nation-states and also in the strategies of extracting surplus. The fundamental cause of these changes has been the internal dynamics of the capitalist mode of production, however, the defeat of the first series of proletarian revolutions and the conditions resulting from the global reversal have also played an important role. The parasitic, unproductive, predatory and decadent character of capital has emerged in an all new form today. The form of its structural crisis also differs from the past. But the problem lies in the fact that the camp of Labour is unable to posit an effective challenge to the Capital.

In fact, this is not possible until a new strategy of proletarian resistance is developed on the foundations of an in-depth understanding of the present modus operandi of capital, its economic policy and politics and its ever new ways of establishing ideological, political and cultural hegemony. The question is not limited to determining the agenda for the common struggles of the immense majority of the unorganised working class and the revolutionary reorganisation of trade union movement. The question is also related to acquaint the working class with its historical mission, once again sowing the seeds of the ideology of proletarian revolution in the working class movement and the rebuilding of its vanguard. It is important to learn from the in-depth study and review and summation of the proletarian revolutions and class struggle in the twentieth century, but equally necessary is to study the new conditions with independent critical wisdom.

The topic of seminar has been decided keeping in mind these problems and challenges. Needless to say, hollow academic discourse is not our intent. We intend to share without prejudices, the study and practical experiences with the activists and partisan left intellectuals and engage in debates and discussions with scientific objectivity. This seminar is just a link in this process. In future we intend to organise a five-day seminar on the same topic with more extensive preparations.

We request all friends and comrades to bring their papers on this topic. It will be better if they inform us beforehand. It will help us in planning the sessions if they can send a copy of the paper earlier.

We extend a heartfelt invitation to you to participate in the seminar. For the convenience of the guest comrades, boarding-lodging and food has been arranged from July 25 at the venue of the program (Chitragupta Mandir Premises, Gorakhpur). Please inform about the date of your arrival, train, bus details to any member of the Organising Committee on their mobile numbers or on the landline number of the office of Organising Committee, so we can receive you at the railway/bus station itself. We assure that there will be no inconvenience to you.

Awaiting your response,

With sincere greetings,

Katyayani, Satyam [Arvind Memorial Seminar Organising Committee]
