Jadavpur University faculty and students protest against police lathicharge inside university campus

November 22, 2010

From students of Jadavpur University –

Jadavpur University is one of the few places where the students have opportunities to present their views or suggestions in any decision or policy of University. Our University is like a platform where anyone is always welcomed and students find a free space.

During the last two years it has been seen that University authority has turned a deaf ear towards any student demand. Let it be demand for more books in Central Library or demand of a hygienic atmosphere in Hostels. Not only this, they have also not kept any of their verbal assurances provided. It is very unfortunate that the authorities have slowly forced us to loose our free space. And the most extreme incident was the brutal ‘lathicharge’ on 9th November against students in front of Gandhi Bhavan and Central library. A detailed report of the incident is given in the attachment. General students were at a state of shock after this incident. And majority of the students have felt an urge for real protest in order to get back the University they had known for years. Many of our teachers are with us and have also made a leaflet supporting our protest.
