Demonstration against sponge iron units in West Bengal – 16 December

December 13, 2010

A day-long sit-in-demonstration will be held on the service road in front of West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) Office at Paribesh Bhavan, Salt Lake (near Beleghata Bypass crossing) on Thursday, 16 December 2010 between 12noon and 5pm.

You are well aware that sponge iron units in several districts of West Bengal have been causing environmental pollution and also devastating the life and livelihood of thousands inhabitants of nearby villages.

Exactly a year back, on 16 December 2009, scores of organisations and initiatives, including Nagarik Mancha, besides eminent members of the citizenry, had gathered at the same place. The Chairman, WBPCB Chairman in presence of senior officials had committed to take appropriate action to stop pollution in a meeting with the members of a delegation.

Later, at a Meeting held in WBPCB office on 28 July 2010, and based on the facts gathered by the Board itself, the WBPCB committed to the representatives of Nagarik Mancha and the victims from the districts, that it would soon initiate suitable action, as per law.

No signs of such action have been evident at the ground level till date. Presently the situation has deteriorated further.

You are also well aware that owing to consistent pressure and persistent protests the polluters have implicated some environmental activists with false cases with an eye towards threatening and harassing them.

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board is showing deliberate negligence towards controlling pollution created by the sponge iron units. Efforts towards reduction of carbon emission are being reduced to a farce owing to WBPCB’s calculated inaction.

We request you to be present at this sit-in-demonstration.
