May 17, 2011

JAN HASTAKSHEP

Campaign Against Fascist Designs

Assemble at 2:30 PM on May 18, 2011 (Wednesday)
at Paryavaran Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi

Going against the findings of several govt. panels/committees of his own ministry, Mr. Jairam Ramesh Union Minister of Environment and Forests has given approval to Posco project. Mr. Ramesh has accepted Odisha Govt.’s assertion that there are no “traditional forest dwellers” in the project area rejecting the opinion of village councils (palli sabhas). Mr. Ramesh has called this as “cooperative federalism” which amounts to cooperation between central and state govts. in the service of corporates and against the people. Through this act, Mr. Ramesh has thrown away his mask of caring for tribals and other forest dwellers.

Acting on this approval, Odisha Govt. has announced starting of acquisition of land from May 18, 2001. Obviously it means using violent means against the peasants and people of the area unwilling to part with their land. Naveen Pattnaik has repeatedly shown that he cares only for the interests of corporates and not that of Odia people. This action of Naveen govt. amounts to taking away livelihood of the people of this area forcibly displacing them and puts the lives of the people at grave risk. Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti has announced its opposition to the Govt. plan.

This “cooperative federalism” between Central and State govt. in the service of corporates at the expense of people of Odisha, also endangers the lives of tribals in Niyamgiri and elsewhere. It should be remembered that the Vedanta refinery is still at Lanjigarh and Govts. are only waiting for appropriate time to strike at tribals’ land and rights. Repression is let loose in the area to silence the movement. To intensify the movement against conspiracies of Central and Odisha govt. Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti and Lok Sangram Manch have undertaken a padyatra from 12th to 17th May, 2011 in which thousands of tribals are participating.

In protest against the approval to Posco project and in support of the struggling people of Erasama and Niyamgiri, Jan Hastakshep will organize a protest at Ministry of Environment and Forests on May 18. 2011. A memorandum will be submitted to the Minister.

Jan Hastaskshep appeals to all opposing approval to Posco project and supporting the struggle of people of Erasama and Niyamgiri to assemble at Paryavaran Bhawan, CGO complex, Lodhi Road, at 2:30 PM on May 18, 2011 and participate in this protest.
