Condemn Nonadanga Slum Eviction and burning by Mamata Govt.

Press Statement

11/04/2012

The forceful eviction of the slum dwellers of Nonadanga of Kolkata, West Bengal from their homes, bulldozing and burning down of the slums and the arrest of activists leading the movement against this eviction, have once more exposed the undemocratic and anti-people character of the Trinamool-Congress State Government led by Mamata Banerjee.

On April 9 the police acting on the Government’s instructions forcefully dispersed a peaceful rally organized by the Nonadanga Anti-Eviction Committee in College Street and arrested 91 people from that rally. All this has revealed the real character of the TMC Government. This attack has brought the message of a grim future to all democratic people.

The TMC government has picked up from where the Left Front Government left. The unimaginable and ceaseless atrocities unleashed on the people by the Left Front Government in the last few years of its rule are being emulated and ‘improved’ by the TMC Government from its very first months. In its bid to make a ‘London’ of Kolkata, the TMC Government has gone all out to act in favour of big capital and crush the basic rights of the toiling people. Thus it has become the duty of all the Slum Dwellers, Homeless People, working class and all democratic-minded people to rise in protest.

All India Coordination of Slum Dwellers and Homeless People severely condemns the attack on the people of Nonadanga and the anti-eviction activists and demands immediate proper rehabilitation and resettlement of them and unconditional release of the seven activists who are still under arrest and have been denied bail.
