Police stations gheroed in UP

May 17, 2012

15 May 2012 – Tribals and other forest dwellers gheroed around ten police stations simultaneously in district Sonbhadra of UP, sending a warning to the Chief Justice, DGP, and CM to stop arresting forest people on false cases by issuing a ‘notice’. There is a change in the language of the people by addressing their demands through a notice and not a memorandum. The whole district authority was taken aback and their notice sent shock waves through the police administration. Moreover, the chair of District Collector has been vacant since the change of the government in April 2012. Several days earlier, people’s organizations issued a statement to the effect that if the government is not able to send any able District Magistrate, then people will take over the district and have the capability of running the district themselves.
