Memorandum on behalf of mass organizations in solidarity with Marikana workers

September 15, 2012

We the undersigned organizations in solidarity with Lonmin platinum mines workers of south Africa have come up to register our protest against ghastly organized massacre of striking workers by the police of South Africa.

The incident may be compared with massacre of lina gold mines workers of Siberia in 1912 where 500 workers were killed by Jarshahi police.

Mining workers work in very difficult condition by putting their life on danger, they are paid lesser amount all over the world. Platinum workers of lonmin platinum mines were demanding their wage revision and they were on strike from 10th of August 2012. August 16 has added a black chapter in history of worker’s struggle. These striking workers were surrounded in Mairikana mines from all side by the police and indiscriminate firing was started. 34 workers were killed and many other wounded. Violent struggle of worker’s with police were going on since 10th August 2012 but on 16th August 2012 police hatched a criminal conspiracy of massacre and surrounded 3000 unarmed workers and attacked with grenade and fire arms.

The role of national union of mines which is associated with ruling African national congress worked to sabotage the worker’s movement. These trade union leaders have been won over by the management and they are working against the worker’s movement.

It is a welcome development that workers of different mines have organized themselves under mines workers and construction union (MWCU). Lomnin mines worker’s movement was organized on call of this very union; however leadership of national union of mines worker’s were against the strike of lonmin workers.

We condemn this barbaric action of South African police as well as government of south Africa which has planned & executed the above said barbaric massacre of platinum mines workers of south Africa. It is also shame for that political power that had history of fighting against apartheid in south Africa but now their real class character got exposed in the incident of 16th August 2012.

We demand that:-

* South African government should take the responsibility of 16th August massacre of Platinum mines workers and resign immediately.
* All Police officer’s who has planned and executed action of 16th August 2012 be immediately arrested and tried for mass murder.
* A Lomnin mine which is a British company be barred from any mining activity in South Africa and its all assets be confiscated.
* Worker’s family be compensated.
* Worker’s rights be restored in South Africa.
