7th Anniversary of Kaling Nagar Firing Observed

On the eve of 7th anniversary of Kaling Nagar firing on Jan 2nd more than 4 thousand tribal people with their traditional arms gathered at Veera Bhumi under the banner of Biasthapana Birodhi Jana Mancha. At 10 am a colorful rally having placards and banners started from Champa Koila the firing spot where 14 tribals were killed by police firing on 2nd Jan 2006 for not leaving their land to the Tata company’s steel plant. Before that people paid their respect to the martyrs in their customary way.

The procession covered the whole area chanting anti displacement and anti people policies of the Govt. On the way the people burnt the effigy of Ratan Tata, Naveen Patnaik and the local MLA Prafulla Ghadei accusing them for the firing. By 12 noon the procession reached the Veera Bhumi, the site where the memorial pillars of 20 martyrs of the struggle has erected. Com. Natabar Sarangi, the state AIKMS convener hoisted the red flag and floral tributes were given to the martyrs.

In the after a memorial meeting was conducted at Veera Bhumi in which Com. Amar Sing Banara and Com. Rabindra Jarika respectively the president and secretary of BBJM presided. Speaking at the occasion Com. Bhalachandra, spokesperson of CPI(ML)ND said that Kaling Nagar movement was a turning point in anti displacement struggle of this country and the heroic resistance shown by this struggle has inspired many anti displacement struggles of this country. He urged the people to carry forward the anti displacement struggles against corporate land grabbing. Com. Natabar Sarangi also addressed the gathering.

Leaders of other organizations like Mahendra Parida of CPI(ML) Liberation and Prasant Paikray of Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti also spoke on this occasion. There were cultural programmes performed by different tribal cultural groups.
