Letters on freedom of expression and its enemies

August 6, 2013

[Varavara Rao was invited to speak in a panel discussion on ‘Expression and censorship’, organized by literary magazine Hans to commemorate Premchand’s birthday. Upon finding out that the list of panelists includes Govindacharya and Ashok Vajpayee, Varavara Rao refused to take part in the programme. Upholding Premchand’s legacy, he questioned the relevance of anti-people, pro fascist intellectuals like Govindacharya and Ashok Vajpayee in this discussion. Following is his open letter to the organizers.

The second letter is a response to the Jansatta editorial and Apoorvanand’s article in Jansatta that had criticized Varavara Rao for not participating in the literary programme organized by Hans. Both the Jansatta editorial and Apoorvanand’s article had criticized him as sectarian. In this letter, he responds to this charge and also addresses some other issues like communalism and the link of literature and politics.- Ed]
