GRSE UPDATE
GRSE WORKERS DECIDED TO START INDEFINITE HUNGER STRIKE FROM 28TH NOVEMBER 2013

Against unprecedented postponement of Trade Union Election at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on two consecutive dates on 8th Oct and 21st Nov, the leaders of Independent Trade Union i.e. GRSE Ltd Workmen’s Union will start the Indefinite Hunger Strike from 8 am of 28th Nov 2013. However, the Registrar of Trade Unions WB have declared the next date of Election on 27th Nov. Considering the same, if the Third date of schedule Election on 27th Nov 2013 be foiled in that case Indefinite Hunger will be commenced on 28th Nov 2013.

Relevant to mention here that as per statutory provisions the Registrar of Trade Unions, Govt. of West Bengal, India had announced the Election for recognition of Trade Unions in all the seven units of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a leading CPSE under the Ministry of Defence, GOI. The election was scheduled on 8th October 2013. But all on a sudden on 2nd October, 2013, the Registrar of Trade Unions, Govt. of WB has issued an order postponing the election on the ground of law and order situation. In the said order it was referred that the police authority states that “there is every chance of breach of peace in and around GRSE Ltd”. Workers of GRSE were surprises how a law enforcing agency, responsible for maintaining law & order, were shied from maintaining law and order postponed the Election on 8th Oct 2013

After lot of criticism from different quarters particularly from Civil Rights Organization, International Trade Unions viz Public Services International (PSI), amongst others, the Government has compelled to declare another date of Election on 21st Nov 2013. But again on 19th Nov 2013 the Registrar of Trade Unions, Govt. of West Bengal vide his Notice postponed the date of Election scheduled on 21.11.2013 on the ground of visit of President of India in the city of Kolkata. However to avoid the future criticism the Govt has fixed another date of Election 27th Nov 2013. For your kind perusal we enclose herewith please find a copy of Notice of RTU.

Though the Govt agencies have fixed the date of Election on 27th Nov 2013 but there is all possibility that in this time the Election may be foiled by the interested quarters by misusing their Administrative powers. Actually the electoral base political parties are scared for emergence of Independent Union of workers and this very reasons trying to frustrate the growing Independent movement of workers, foiling /cancelling the Union election of GRSE workers are part of said ill design of ruling party in WB.

In this backdrop, if the Third date of schedule Election on 27th Nov get foiled in that case leaders of Independent Trade Union – Workmen’s Union will compelled to start the Indefinite Hunger Strike from 8am of 28th Nov 2013 Workers of GRSE are continuing their struggle for their fundamental right i.e. Right to Organize, we therefore seeking solidarity support from all the democratic organizations and individuals.

We urge upon you to please publish the GRSE –UPDATE at you site and kindly extend your solidarity be sending letters to following Govt. agencies for holding the Union election at GRSE on 27th Nov 2013 peacefully and without any obstructions. Please forward the copy to your letter to the undersigned.
