Hora: A play on Maruti Suzuki Workers’ Struggle

Jan Jagaran Yatra reaches Delhi on 17th Day in a mass protest demonstration

31/1/2014

Sixteen days across cities, towns, villages of Haryana and through Gurgaon and Delhi, marching with our bare but united voice of anger and struggle against injustice, we organized a Protest Demonstration in Jantar Mantar today 31st January 2014. We marched from in front of the Parliament House, Delhi, also sloganeering in front of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda’s residence before reaching Jantar Mantar. Today’s show of solidarity with our struggle enthused us, as all Trade Unions of Gurgaon, Delhi-NCR and a number of student-youth, women’s and mass democratic and political organisations, as well as prominent intellectuals came together. We submitted a memorandum supported by all organisations to the President of India.

Workers, workers organisations and Trade Unions were present in full solidarity. Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union, Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union, Suzuki Motorcycles India Employees Union, RICO Employees Union, FCC Rico Employees Union, Nerolac Employees Union- Rewari, Venus Workers Union-Faridabad, Subros Employees Union, Bajaj Motors Employees Union spoke in solidarity. National Trade Union federations like AITUC, AICCTU, AIUTUC, CITU, HMS, ICTU, IFTU, AIFTU(New), NTUI and others were present. Among those present were also AITUC’s national president Amrajeet Kaur and CITU’s national leader Tapan Sen.

Yogendra Yadav as well as Arundhati Roy also expressed solidarity with the struggle. Mass democratic organisations like Jan Sangharsh Manch Haryana, Inqlabi Mazdoor Kendra, Shramik Sangram Committee, Krantikari Naujawan Sabha, Mazdoor Patrika, Sangharsrat Mehnatkash patrika, Mazdoor Ekta Committee, PUDR, Samtamulak Mahila Sagathan were present who mobilized many democratic loving people. Solidarity greetings from across the country and even abroad came with participation and solidarity messages from a number of worker organisations like CMM- Mazdoor Karyakarta Committee, Inqlabi Jan Awaz patrika from Punjab, Hyundai Motors Employees Union and CITU Tamil Nadu, Toyota Employees Union Chennai, and countless others. Trade Union Solidarity Committee- Mumbai also organized campaign and fund collection through postcards made with working class murals. We also received solidarity greetings from Thai Suzuki Workers Union from Thailand. Support from student community also energized the meeting. Other than JNUSU, organisations like AISA, DSF, DSU, Nauroj, Pratidhwani, SFI, TNM, VSM, VYS and many others were present. The struggle on the streets as well as the legal battle is alive with the spirit of workers and pro-worker masses strengthened.

The Jan Jagaran Yatra, foot-march against injustice, which started on 15th January 2014 from Kaithal, Haryana and walked through 300km across Kaithal, Jind, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Gurgaon in Haryana before reaching Delhi. All the terminated workers and a number of our families of both arrested and terminated workers participated with vigour in the march. 2500 families who have been reduced to penury, joblessness and face continuous harassment and repression from the police-administration and delay in justice, hence a denying of justice by the courts till date, have thus shown the indomitable spirit of struggle even almost 2 years into this difficult road. We have received tremendous support, solidarity and encouragement from ordinary workers, peasants, students and individuals in all the villages, towns of the state of Haryana and nearby areas that we have walked through. These ordinary mehnatkash toilers tell us during the season of electoral calculations, that our struggle is a just struggle against exploitation and injustice wrought about the combined might of the government-administration-police serving capitalists like Maruti Suzuki management. Our bail plea of arrested 148 workers has been earlier rejected in the lower court and HC on the absurd ground of ‘hampering foreign investment’ make a mockery of the system of justice. The appeal against this rejection is pending in the Supreme Court, with a hearing that happened today postponed again to 3rd February 2014. Representing the State of Haryana on a payroll of Rs. 11.25 lakh per hearing, Adv. KTS Tulsi presented his papers of objection to the bail plea while our counsel Adv. Vrinda Grover argued the delaying and denying of justice to workers who have been made part of conspiracy by the Maruti Suzuki management. Cases against 100 workers and trial on 11 workers and activists in Kaithal are also going on. The labour cases are also pending where we are arguing against the complete illegality of the move of Maruti Suzuki management to have terminated workers without any domestic enquiry on speculative flimsy grounds.

We marched through Delhi yesterday. While in Gurgaon, hundreds of workers and all Trade Unions came in our support making the struggle the indicator of common struggle of workers in the entire industrial belt of Gurgaon-Manear-Dharuhera-Bawal, in the rousing welcome and solidarity meetings in various towns and villages of Haryana and in Delhi, we saw another possibility of forging a mass solidarity with the struggle of workers.

Day before, after our protest demonstration in front of the Maruti Suzuki factory in Gurgaon along with workers and Union from the plant, we walked to the Maruti Suzuki All-India Head Quarters in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, where we organized another protest demonstration with slogans of ‘Release the Arrested Workers’ and ‘Stop Repression through slapping false cases and continued Harassment of worker families’, ‘Bring the conspiratorial anti-worker management to book’. Our demand of an impartial investigation into the incident which has also been denied us, point to the way in which we have been targeted by the anti-worker management and the anti-worker government.

WE reiterate our demands of release of 148 arrested workers who have been denied bail for the last 18 month, reinstatement of all terminated workers, and an impartial investigation into the incident of 18th July 2012. In the last three years, our struggle has seen a long road. We have seen the pro-corporate, anti-worker, anti-people faces of the company management, labour and other administrative departments, the police and courts, and if our demands are not met, we shall intensify our struggle in the coming says. We appeal to all workers, trade unions, student-youth and women’s organisations, and mass and democratic organizations and individuals to join us in spreading the struggle.

12th Day of MSWU’s Jan Jagaran Yatra
‘जुल्मी कब तक जुल्म करेगा शोषण़ के हथियारों से, हम भी उसको ध्वस्त करेंगे एकताबद्ध कतारों से।’

Jhajjar (Haryana). MSWU’s march from Kaithal, Haryana to Delhi (15-31 Jan), Jan Jagaran Yatra is crossing through Jhajjar district today before it reaches Gurgaon. We started this morning from Dadri Toi questioning the exploitation and injustice on us on Republic Day, when the gan has been divorced from the tantr, which we see today only working for the moneyed. We continued getting tremendous response of solidarity with our Yatra from across towns and villages of the state, where not only workers and the huge army of unemployed, but also peasants, students attested to the legitimacy of our demand. While in Digal, local people opened the local senior secondary school for us to stay on 23rd night, in Jhajjar, workers of Jal Board welcomed us and gave us their Union space for lodging on 24th night and the local panchayat welcomed us in Dadri Toi. We exchanged our common class anger, we exchanged our experiences of struggle and hope for a transformation of the present anti-worker anti-people system. In Jhajjar, we marched through the city, organising many street-corner meetings and cultural ways of communicating our message. In Ambedkar chowk, the many residents and informal sector workers came to show solidarity with our Yatra which enthused and strengthened us.

Workers from Maruti Suzuki Manesar who are working inside the plant also joined the march in solidarity. Ramniwas of Provisional Committee, MSWU addressed the gathering saying that the government is only listening to the company management and has only worked to legitimize the conspiracy of the company in murder of the company HR who died in the incident of 18th July 2012, and has not even done any proper investigation into the matter which has been one of the important demands of the MSWU. It has rather bypassed all law of the land and has kept 148 workers in jail for the last 18 months without any of them getting bail, which is against all notions of justice. He reiterated the demand of release of all arrested workers and end to goonda rule by the state government. The companies of the region have at present stopped employing workers and youth from Haryana in the factories here like in the new Panasonic company in Jhajjar, while their profit margins increases manifold on the basis of this unemployment. The Union also stressed on the reinstatement of 2300 terminated workers.

Other than MSWU, organizers and people from various mass democratic organisations like Sarva Karamchari Sangh- Jal Board workers, Jan Sangharsh Manch, Inquilabi Mazdoor Kendra, Krantikari Naujawan Sabha, Chattisgarh Mukti Morcha- Mazdoor Karyakarta Committee, Samtamulak Mahila Sangathan, Janrang-Delhi and many others came in support. Com Somnath from Jan Sangharsh Manch Haryana and Com Kaladas from CMM-Mazdoor Karyakarta Committee also spoke in solidarity in the sabha in Dadri Toi, Jhajjar.

We started on 15th January from Kaithal and are entering Gurgaon’s Farukhnagar today having crossed Jind, Rohtak and Jhajjar. We shall start from there tomorrow and walk through on to Gurgaon where workers and trade unions will join us on 28th January 2014. On 29th Jan, we shall go on to Delhi where student-youth organisations are organizing a program at JNU in solidarity with our Padayatra, and on 30th Jan, we shall march through Delhi. This will culminate on 31st Jan 2014 in a day-long protest demonstration in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. We appeal to all workers, trade unions, student-youth and women’s organisations, and mass and democratic organizations to join us, and spread the struggle.

9th day of MSWU’s Jan Jagaran Yatra
‘जुल्मी कब तक जुल्म करेगा शोषण़ के हथियारों से, हम भी उसको ध्वस्त करेंगे एकताबद्ध कतारों से।’

Rohtak (Haryana). The foot-march against injustice Jan Jagaran Yatra through villages and towns across Haryana reached Rohtak and organized a protest demonstration starting from Rohtak Bus Stand in the morning today 23rd January 2014. We marched through the city and demonstrated before the District Administration Office in Rohtak, and joined the program of striking workers of electricity and water board, Roadways, primary teachers, computer instructors, Anganwadi and Asha workers and many others in Mansarover Park, before starting off again on our way towards Delhi. The sense of solidarity among workers enthused and strengthened us.

Rajpal of Provisional Committee, MSWU addressed the gathering of thousands of workers here and explained why Maruti workers are on the path of struggle for more than 2 years, and reiterated the demand of release of all arrested workers and end to goonda rule by the state government. Senior Advocate R.S. Hooda also came to speak in solidarity and exposed the pro-capitalist rulings of the judiciary of the country, saying that denying bail to 148 workers in jail for the last 18 months, and paying a lawyer Rs.11.25lakh on each appearance on public money to file cases against workers on behest of Mr. Suzuki’s empire while 2500 families are living jobless and under continuous harassment and in penury, the state government and judiciary show their true colours.

We submitted a memorandum to the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda through the DC Rohtak, demanding the release of arrested 148 workers who have still not got bail for the last 18 months, and reinstatement of 2300 terminated workers. Other than MSWU, organizers and people from various mass democratic organisations like Jan Sangharsh Manch, Inquilabi Mazdoor Kendra, Krantikari Naujawan Sabha, Chattisgarh Mukti Morcha- Mazdoor Karyakarta Committee, Samtamulak Mahila Sangathan, CITU Haryana, Khet Mazdoor Union, Sarva Karamchari Sangh, Electricity Board Employees Union, Haryana Roadways employees union, SFI, DYFI, Chatra Ekta Manch- Rohtak, Revolutionary Cultural Front-Delhi and many others came in support.

Padayatra, and on 30th Jan, we shall march through Delhi. This will culminate on 31st Jan 2014 in a day-long protest demonstration in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. We appeal to all workers, trade unions, student-youth and women’s organisations, and mass and democratic organizations to join us, and spread the struggle.

8th day of MSWU’s Jan Jagaran Yatra

‘जुल्मी कब तक जुल्म करेगा शोषण़ के हथियारों से, हम भी उसको ध्वस्त करेंगे एकताबद्ध कतारों से।’

MSWU_padayatra_2

The foot-march against injustice Jan Jagaran Yatra through villages and towns across Haryana has reached Rohtak on its 8th day. We shall organize a sabha, public meeting in Mansarover park in Rohtak city in the morning tomorrow. Rohtak has been advertised as having seen so-called ‘development’ being Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda’s hometown. Its IMT also houses the factory Maruti Suzuki R&D Centre. But our Jan Jagaran Yatra exposes the hollowness of such development, based as it is on the jailed, terminated, jobless youth of the state. Maruti Suzuki’s practical model of ‘Research and Development’ was tested on us when 546 permanent and 1800 contract workers were terminated from our jobs from Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant. This ‘development’ is further secured by the government when, without any proper or impartial investigation, it throws 148 workers in jail and denies us bail for the last 18 months. When the government appoints a lawyer for crores of rupees on each hearing to file cases against workers and justify everyday harassment of workers families at the behest of the company management, then we realise that it is a government of the capitalists, not of workers and ordinary toilers.

We started our Padayatra on 15th January from Kaithal and have reached Rohtak today 22nd Jan, walking through Jind on 19th Jan, Gatoli and Julana on 20th, Qila Jafargarh, Lakhan Majra and Bhagwatipur yesterday. Maruti workers and families of arrested workers are walking with us through village after village. We are taking the message of our struggle against exploitation heaped on us organising nukkad sabhas wherever our march is going through. Rajpal of MSWU said in a sabha in Titoli on the Rohtak-Jind road, “You might be thinking where in this shivering winter and weather of elections, are these workers walking to? We want to tell you that we have been forced on this path of struggle to demand the release of 148 workers who are languishing in jail for the last 18 months for no fault of theirs other than the demand of formation of Union and regularisation of contract workers. Because we raised the issue of exploitative work conditions inside the factory, we have been targeted.” Wherever our Padayatra has gone, people have come out in support, even arranging food and lodging for all the padayatris. The government has tried to use its muscle and repressive power even during the padayatra. CID and police personnel have been constantly following our trail, and even threatened sarpanch (village heads) in Kithana and Gatoli villages against providing us any support. In all other villages, Panchayats helped us, and where they did not, the local people defied these sarpanches who fear their patronage of the anti-people government masters, and willingly gave us not only food and places to stay, but even solidarity and strength to our struggle.

Other than MSWU, organizers and people from various mass democratic organisations like Jan Sangharsh Manch, Inquilabi Mazdoor Kendra, Krantikari Naujawan Sabha, Samtamulak Mahila Sangathan, CITU, Khet Mazdoor Union, Sarva Karamchari Sangh and many others came in support. We have been getting and will continue to get solidarity from many such organisations in the coming days. They also pointed out that similar situation of exploitation and injustice, and struggle against the same is going on at present across the state of Haryana, not to mention all over the country. The struggle of workers in Gurgaon-Manesar belt, with ongoing strike of workers in Autofit factory and recent unrest in Munjal Kiriu, Baxter and other factories point to this fact. Workers in Haryana Roadways, Electricity Board workers, Anganwadi and Asha workers, computer teachers, library instructors and many others are on strike. They are all our brothers and sisters, and point to the dark side of the so-called ‘development model’ and the Chief Minister’s hollow claims of ‘Haryana no.1’.

In the last three years and specially in the last 18 months, our struggle has seen a long road. We have seen the pro-corporate, anti-worker, anti-people faces of the company management, labour and other administrative departments, the police and courts, and if our demands are not met, we shall intensify our struggle in the coming says. After our sabha in Rohtak’s Mansarover park at 10am tomorrow, our Padayatra shall go on through Jhajjar (Digal, Chamanpur, Gudda, Dadri Toi) from 23rd to 26th and reach Gurgaon on 28th where workers and trade unions will join us. On 29th Jan, we shall go on to Delhi where student-youth organisations are organizing a program at JNU, and on 30th Jan, we shall march through Delhi. On 31st Jan, we are organizing a day-long sabha in Jantar Mantar. We appeal to all workers, trade unions, student-youth and women’s organisations, and mass and democratic organizations to join us, and spread the struggle.

Background

*Appeal from revolutionary mass organisations*

*RISE AND STRENGTHEN THE MARUTI WORKERS’ FIGHT AGAINST INJUSTICE!*
*RELEASE THE FALSELY IMPLICATED 148 WORKERS DENIED BAIL FOR 18 MONTHS!!*
*JOIN THE JAN JAGARAN YATRA FROM 15TH TO 31ST JANUARY!!!*

In the midst of continuing attacks on the rights and livelihood of the workers everywhere by the desi-videsi capitalists and the central and state govts governed by political parties of different shades, workers in a number of factories in the recent times are struggling to form their unions and resist the onslaught of their employers. The struggle of Maruti Suzuki Manesar factory workers is one among the forefront of such struggles, their struggle continuing from when it came out into the open in May 2011 riding through many ups and downs, facing numerous assaults of the Maruti employer and govt.-state-machinery combine. Post the 18th july 2012 violent incident in the Maruti Manesar factory, through which the employer craftily attempted to drown the voice of protest of the Maruti workers they are busy branding the workers as criminals with open aid and collusion of the govt. Hence it has become a still tougher uphill task but the fighting Maruti workers have not given up. With 148 of their comrades in jail, bail denied to them for a long one and half years, both the labour and criminal cases lingering for months, and the workers’ families bearing great hardships, the fighting Maruti workers are continuing their struggle against great odds and repeated threats and harassments of the state machinery and Maruti management. As a part of this ongoing struggle *from this 15th of January the Maruti workers with their families and support of other trade unions, workers organizations and students have started a Jan Jagaran Yatra
appealing to the common masses to rise and lend stronger support for their fight against injustice. It has started from Kaithal in Haryana on the 15th and will pass through several districts of the state with mass meetings and demonstrations at different spots such as Rohtak, Jind, Gurgaon, and ultimately culminating in a big demonstration and presentation of memorandum to the President at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on the 31st of January.*

*We appeal to all organisations and individuals, who feel that the banner of revolt raised by the Maruti Manesar factory workers against the assaults on their rights by the management and the state govt., like all such revolts against these capitalist class policies that are being adopted by all govts. of all kinds of established political parties from the so-called left to the right, must be supported with all possible effort,* to rally in support of the Maruti workers’ continuing endeavour to turn against the powerful tide of capitalists onslaught and particularly free their jailed
148 co-workers, who have been randomly picked up and put behind bars foisting concocted charges on them;* to participate in the true spirit of solidarity in the Padayatra specially with full strength on the 31st January demonstration and mass-meeting at Jantar Mantar bringing along with them workers of other factories and common toiling masses to further
strengthen that voice of revolt.*

Dear Comrades,

You have stood in solidarity with us throughout our struggle in the past more than two years. At the present juncture in our struggle, we are going on a Padayatra from 15th to 31st January 2014, starting from Kaithal through Jind-Rohtak-Gurgaon to Delhi. The main focus of the Padayatra is the demand for the release of the 148 arrested workers who are still
languishing in jail since 18th July 2012. Iman Khan, a member of the Provisional Working Committee was released on bail on 17th December 2013. After this, in first hearing on bail applications for two workers (among the 6 whose bail applications were rejected in the lower and HC earlier) in the Supreme Court on 6th January 2014, the date was further extended by one month. The judiciary is also acting to delay justice and deny justice.

However in Gurgaon, as we saw during our day-long fast on 20-21 December in Gurgaon, the Trade Unions are extending their support at present. There is also a series of strikes going on at present in factories in the Gurgaon-Manesar industrial belt where workers are facing similar situations of exploitation that we face and are struggling against it. The Padayatra will reach Gurgaon on 28th Jan, where we expect workers and trade unions to participate in solidarity. We also invite you to the meeting.

The Padayatra will be in Gurgaon-Delhi from 29-31st January and we will have our final program on 31st January in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. On 29thJan, we plan to stay in Mahipalpur/JNU and march on 30th through Munirka-IIT Gate-AIIMS-South Ex-Dyal Singh College-Janpath and reach Jantar Mantar in the evening. We are writing to you to help us organize this final program.

While in the earlier program of *Jan Sunwai* in Jantar Mantar on 30thAugust 2013 was a joint program of MSWU and Nagrik Adhikar Manch Haryana (platform of 28 organizations), this is an independent program of the MSWU. We are attaching the poster and parcha of the march, and its schedule. We had called for a meeting earlier in Delhi but we unable to inform everyone, so we are writing to all groups of Delhi who have helped us as Maruti Mazdoor Sangharsh Ekjuta Samiti. If you decide on a meeting to discuss this before 15th January, some member of the MSWU can participate if required.
