PROTEST AGAINST THE BRUTAL POLICE CRACKDOWN ON THE PEOPLE OF THE ANTIPOSCO MOVEMENT IN ODISHA
JOIN THE PROTEST DEMONSTRATION AT ODISHA BHAVAN, CHANAKYAPURI, NEW DELHI AT 12 NOON ON MONDAY, 11 FEBRUARY
Dear friends and comrades,
At 4 am on 3rd February 2013, there was a heavy police crackdown on the people of Govindpur and Nuagaon, Jagatsinghpur district in Odisha who have been resisting the forceful acquisition of land for the POSCO project. While the Chief Minister claims that Odisha is on the path of peaceful industrialization, its government sends platoons of police for land acquisition for this Korean mega steel plant.
Twelve police platoons entered the villages at 4 am of February 3 and indiscriminately hit people with lathis, cut many trees and destroyed several betel vines. More than 50 persons received injuries; of them 4 women, 1 elderly person and a 11 –year-old boy are severely injured. The police arbitrarily arrested and detained several men and women who tried to resist the action. They demolished the betel vineyards – one of the most viable local livelihoods.
In solidarity with the struggling people of Odisha and elsewhere
In protest against state violence, corporate land grab and mindless capitalist plunder
Let us unitedly raise our voices loud and clear
Let us demand:
· Immediate withdrawal of police from the area
· Immediate release of people who have been illegally arrested
· Provision of adequate medical care to all the injured in the area
· Scrapping of all forms of land acquisition
