Dr. Punyabrata Gun, who composed on behalf of the Morcha the contained 38 reports, remarks, “With the beginning of the Bhilai workers’ struggle in 1990, requests to write on that struggle began to pour in from newer magazines…It was becoming increasingly impossible to write for individual magazines, so came the idea to make reports in English, which our friends could use to furnish their own writings”.

The first such issue ‘Chhattishgarh: State Terror on Peaceful Workers’ Struggle’ came on 22.02.1991 after the imprisonment of Com. Niyogi—an attempt to curb the workers’ struggle. It was, as were the issues to follow, printed on a homemade cyclostyle, a painstaking and time consuming process, and sent to 40 addresses. The second report was on 5.3. 1991. By the third report on 22.03.1991, the bulletin was named ‘Update from Bhilai’ which was rechristened ‘Update from Chhattishgarh’ on 18.9.1991.

From the 31.01.1992 issue onwards the updates are numbered; that issue is numbered 19. The last issue of Update from Chhattishgarh is No 38, published on 15.12.1993.
The scrupulous documentation and incisive political commentary contained in this collection, is of immense historical value and paves the way to a more nuanced understanding of the Chhattisgarh workers struggle.
